So, all you have to do is follow these simple steps, and remember to have a friend, or mentor, check it for you, when you've finished.
Ensure that your cover letter is in the same format as your CV, (i.e. same font style and size etc..)
When responding to an advertisement, address the criteria set out in it. Also use the ad to determine key words and use them in your cover letter.
Paragraph 1 - Inform the reader of the letter's purpose
Paragraph 2 - Outline your skills and experience (i.e. it should be a version of your profile from your CV, ensure they are in line with the needs of the recruiter)
Paragraph 3 - Inform the reader about exactly what it is that appeals to you about their business. Tell the reader what you have to offer their company (remember: if nothing else, passion!) And lastly, tell them how they will benefit by hiring you.
Final Paragraph - Be proactive! Ask for the opportunity of an interview. (Enthusiasm will take you far - be positive and confident, without being arrogant.)
A Fantastic Tip - Use action verbs to start sentences. This really gets a recruiter's attention. If you find yourself repeating the same words, utilize a Thesaurus to make your writing more interesting. Proof read at least 3 times and check your spelling, grammar, layout, addressee's name, title and details.
